DIRECT TO GARMENT PRINTING
DTG is a relatively new fabric printing method that prints an image directly onto a garment or fabric through what is essentially a modified version of a traditional inkjet printer. Think of a regular inkjet printer which has been modified to “accept” garments instead of paper. The ink is printed directly onto fabric which results in exceptional “hand” (common term in the industry referring to how a garment feels once the image or design has been printed on it), and offers more flexibility than screen printing in terms of color variation and turn-around time (especially for smaller orders).
The most common form of printing available. ink is placed in a fine mesh screen in the shape of your design and is squeegeed through the screen onto your t-shirt. Most of the time, your design will be printed in spot colors - that means each color in your design gets printed individually through a separate screen, coming together to make your design when all is said and done.
Direct embroidery is where the design or logo is woven or sewn directly into the material of the garment. The embroidered design essentially becomes part of the material. You might contrast direct embroidery with something like a patch where the logo is embroidered on a piece of material first and then the patch is placed on top of and merely attached to a garment.
Dye Sublimation, as a process is really very simple. It is the method of applying an image to specially coated ceramics, metals and polyester cloth, using three main ingredients: sublimation ink, heat and pressure.
Sublimation ink is unique in its ability to convert from a solid to a gas without going through a liquid form. (Just like dry ice.) The conversion is initiated by heat and controlled with pressure and time. Hard items such as ceramic, fiber board, metals, etc. requires a special coating to accept the sublimation inks. You must purchase the mugs, tiles, metals, etc. with the coating already on them, it is not something you can coat yourself.
There is small scale Sublimation printing, and Large scale sublimation printing. the small scale can print 13X19 dimensions, Large scale can be up to 72 inches, used for all over print styles.
